Retirement Pay (if eligible): Calculate your pension and know the payout schedule. VA Benefits: Apply for VA disability compensation, education benefits (e.g., GI Bill), and VA healthcare. Even if you're not disabled, it's wise to get evaluated. Severance Pay (if applicable): Understand how it affects other benefits.
Estimate new monthly income (including or excluding military pay/benefits). Track new expenses (civilian healthcare, housing, insurance, food, etc.). Create a monthly spending plan to avoid debt during transition.
Start job hunting early. Use: Veteran job programs (Hiring Our Heroes, USAJobs.gov). Translating military skills to civilian job language. Consider federal jobs for preference points. Some also start businesses or go into contract work.
Decide between: TRICARE (if retired), VA healthcare, Employer-provided healthcare, Marketplace plans (ACA).
Keep it with the government, roll it into an IRA, or 401(k) with a new employer. Don't cash it out unless absolutely necessary—it creates taxes and penalties.
